The main window¶
Use this page to find your way around the ViziCAL window.
Top bar¶
- Activate License: shows only while the computer has no active licence. See Activate your licence.
- Photometer: the photometer ViziCAL measures with, for example an X-Rite or Spyder model. If you have more than one, choose here. Built-in photometers in LG and WIDE displays are found automatically. No photometer connected means ViziCAL can't find one. See Troubleshooting.
Displays¶
The Displays list on the left shows one card for each display connected to the computer. Click a card to select that display. The graphs, results and most settings then show that display.
- Identify Displays shows a large number on each screen, so you can tell which card is which.
- Each card shows the display's name, its standard, and Last calibrated: with the date of its last calibration.
- For a display with a built-in photometer and automatic checks turned on, the card shows Auto cal check: and the date of the last automatic check instead. An icon at the top right of the card shows how the checks are going:
- a green clipboard: checks are running and the last one passed,
- an amber warning: the last check failed, the photometer position isn't registered, or a check is overdue,
- a grey clock: checks are scheduled, but none has run yet.
- The switch on the card turns the display's calibration on or off. Off puts back the display's uncorrected output. The calibration is kept, so you can turn it on again.
- The i button opens Display information.
Display card buttons¶
| Button | What it does |
|---|---|
| Start Calibration | Measures the display and corrects it. See Calibrate a display. |
| Check Calibration | Measures the display and compares it with the standard, without changing the calibration. See Check a calibration. |
| Measure Uniformity | Measures brightness at several places on the screen. |
| Measure Illuminance (Lux) | Measures the light falling on the screen from the room. |
| Measure Ambient Luminance | Measures room light reflected off the screen. |
The three measurements are explained in Measure ambient light, illuminance and uniformity.
Right-click a card for more options. On a display calibrated through its own LUT (such as a WIDE display), Restore display LUT... puts back the display's own calibration from the backup ViziCAL saved before it first calibrated the display.
Results¶
The right-hand side shows the results of the selected display's latest calibration or check.
- The results panel at the top lists the measured values and whether each one passed. For example L'max (brightest white), L'min (darkest black), the luminance ratio, GSDF conformance and colour accuracy. Hover over a value for an explanation. These terms are in the Glossary.
- Click the edit button next to the ambient luminance (Lamb) value to open Set ambient luminance. Type a value between 0.0 and 5.0 cd/m², or click Measure to measure it. Tick Apply to all displays to use the same value everywhere, then click OK.
- Click the sun button next to L'max (Seek Lmax target) to open Set Brightness. It adjusts the display's brightness until it reaches a target you type in cd/m². This works only on displays whose brightness ViziCAL can control.
- The tabs below show graphs:
- Radiology displays: Luminance, Contrast and JND.
- Colour displays: Colour Error, Colour Gamut, Luminance and Colour Accuracy.
- History shows past calibrations, checks and reports. See The History tab.
- Settings has all of ViziCAL's settings. See Settings.
Bottom buttons¶
| Button | What it does |
|---|---|
| Visual Checks | Starts a visual check of the selected display. See Run visual checks. |
| Save Report | Makes a PDF report of the latest results. See Save reports and upload results. |
| Upload Results | Sends the latest results to your web account. It's available when the web service is on for your organisation. |
| Ask AI | Opens Ask ViziCAL AI. |
| Exit | Closes ViziCAL. If the web service is on for your organisation and some results haven't been uploaded, the Results not posted window asks whether to send them first. |
While ViziCAL is open, ViziCAL Apply pauses. When you close ViziCAL, ViziCAL Apply starts again and keeps your calibrations applied.
