Profile your displays

Use this page to measure your displays with ViziProfiler, from finding the hardware to the end of the measurements.

The steps are listed down the left of the window. Use Next and Back at the bottom to move between them.

Before you start

  • Plug in the photometer and let the displays warm up for at least 30 minutes.
  • Turn off Windows HDR and Auto Color Management for the displays you test.
  • Have the room lit as it normally is when you read images.

Step 1: Hardware

  1. Click Discover hardware.
  2. Check that each display is listed, with its model, resolution, size and connection.
  3. Under Measurement instrument, choose your photometer if more than one is connected.
  4. Click Next.

Nothing on the displays changes in this step.

Step 2: Clinical task and standard

  1. Under Clinical task, choose what the displays are used for, for example Primary diagnostic – general radiography, Mammography / tomosynthesis, Secondary / clinical review, Dental or Digital pathology / whole slide imaging.
  2. Under Standard profile, choose the standard to judge against. ViziProfiler suggests one for the task.
  3. If the standard has room classes (DIN 6868-157), choose the Room class.
  4. Type the room's light level in Illuminance at the screen (lux), or click Measure illuminance if your photometer can measure room light.
  5. If you measured the screen's reflected light with the display switched off, type it in Lamb, display off (cd/m², optional). If you leave it blank, ViziProfiler estimates it from the room light.
  6. Fill in the site details for the report: Organisation, Site, Room, Workstation and Operator.
  7. Click Next.

The page lists the limits that will be used. A limit marked † hasn't yet been checked against the published standard. These limits are marked in the report too.

Tip

Choose Custom under Standard profile to use your own limits. Click Edit custom limits…, change the values, then click Save.

Step 3: Fitness pre-check

ViziProfiler compares each display's hardware with the requirements before measuring anything. Each requirement shows one of:

Result Meaning
Meets The hardware meets this requirement.
Meets after calibration (likely) ViziCAL's calibration should bring the display within this limit.
Does not meet The hardware doesn't meet this requirement, for example the pixels are too large for diagnosis.
Unknown (needs measurement) Only a measurement can tell. ViziProfiler measures it in steps 5–6.

If anything shows Does not meet, you can still go on. Tick Continue anyway to profile the display regardless. The report records that you continued.

Step 4: Tests and display modes

  1. Under Test set, choose:
    • Quick: brightness range, greyscale response and white point. No help needed from you.
    • Standard: Quick, plus room light, uniformity, a short stability check, visual test patterns and matching between displays.
    • Comprehensive: every greyscale and visual test, with more measurements.
    • Colour clinical: the colour tests, for colour image review.
    • Custom: tick the tests you want.
  2. Under Display modes to profile, tick the display settings to measure. The list comes from each display. Untick Profile display name to leave a display out.
  3. If a display can't be controlled from the computer, type the name of a setting and click Add manual mode. ViziProfiler asks you to set it on the display's own menu when it gets there.
  4. Optionally, choose Brightness steps to also measure lower brightness settings, and tick RGB gain trim to let ViziProfiler try adjusting the display's colour balance towards the standard white.
  5. Check Estimated run time and the list of tests that need your help.
  6. Click Start measuring.

Settings marked not recommended for medical viewing add image processing (for example dynamic contrast). They're listed, but not ticked.

Steps 5–6: Measure

ViziProfiler first records every display setting it may change. Then, for each setting you chose, it:

  1. changes the display to that setting,
  2. checks that the brightness has settled,
  3. runs the tests.

During the run:

  • Follow the prompts. ViziProfiler asks you to Place the sensor on a display, move it for the uniformity test, or judge test patterns by eye (Pass, Fail or Skip).
  • Click Pause to stop for a while, then Resume. Pressing Esc while a test pattern is showing also pauses.
  • Click Skip this mode to move on to the next setting.
  • Click Cancel and restore to stop. ViziProfiler puts your displays back to their original settings.

Warning

Don't change the display's settings on its own menu while ViziProfiler is measuring, unless ViziProfiler asks you to.

When the measurements are finished, ViziProfiler moves on to the results. See Results, finishing and reports.

Common problems

ViziProfiler asks you to change a setting on the display's menu
The display can't be controlled from the computer. Use the buttons on the display, then click Done. ViziProfiler confirms the change by measuring.
